2026 unit information
Modern lighting design practice relies on digital tools to develop, evaluate, and communicate design proposals across diverse contexts. In this unit, students develop skills in using professional lighting simulation and evaluation tools as a means of exploring design options, assessing design performance, and presenting concepts. The unit covers the principles behind lighting calculation models, rendering techniques, design workflows, interpretation of outputs, and design assessments with relevant lighting codes and standards. Through simulated design exercises, students model lighting strategies in various spatial environments, gaining practical skills in visualisation and evaluation. The unit emphasises the role of digital tools to support critical design thinking.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. understand the abilities and limitations of lighting design software packages.
- LO2. overview of Australian Lighting Standards
- LO3. demonstrate proficiency with AGi32.
- LO4. select and apply lighting products to develop plans that adhere to Australian standards for exterior lighting.
- LO5. select and apply lighting products to develop plans that adhere to Australian standards for interior lighting.
- LO6. visually present your lighting design plans, attractively and meaningfully.
