DESC9154: Lighting Design Communication and Evaluation
2027 unit information
This unit develops students' capacity to use digital tools to explore, evaluate, and communicate lighting design proposals across a range of spatial contexts. Emphasis is placed on integrating technical analysis with critical design thinking to support informed and persuasive design outcomes. Students gain practical skills in simulation and visualisation tools, using them to test design options, assess performance, and communicate intent. Through applied exercises, students model and evaluate lighting strategies within diverse environments, developing an understanding of how digital tools can inform decisions related to spatial experience, environmental performance, and compliance with relevant standards and codes. The unit positions digital techniques not as purely representational tools, but as active components of the design process supporting iterative exploration, evidence based evaluation, and clear communication of complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Understand and critically evaluate the abilities and limitations of lighting design tools and software
- LO2. Develop applied understanding of Australian Lighting Standards
- LO3. Demonstrate proficiency in using lighting design tools to analyse and communicate design intent
- LO4. Develop, analyse and communicate lighting design solutions for interior lighting
- LO5. Develop, analyse and communicate lighting design solutions for exterior lighting
- LO6. Present lighting design proposals in engaging and meaningful ways
