2027 unit information
This unit introduces the fundamentals of the human visual system as a foundation for human-centred lighting and interaction design. Given that the primary function of light is to facilitate visual perception, effective user-centred lighting design requires a thorough understanding of the biological link between light and vision. Specific topics include an overview of visual anatomy, the behaviour of the photoreceptors, and post-receptoral processing that leads to colour perception. The spectral, spatial, and temporal characteristics of visual processing are also covered. Important visual phenomena, such as chromatic adaptation and contrast sensitivity, are discussed. Through a research-informed and applied approach, students learn to translate knowledge of human vision into design decisions. Emphasis is placed on the creative application of visual perception, including the use of visual illusions to create engaging and interactive art installations.

- LO3. evaluate contemporary issues in lighting with consideration of the mechanisms and limitations of the human visual system.
