This unit invites you to rethink how design ideas are created. Rather than starting with drawings or digital models, you will begin with materials—testing, making, and exploring how ideas emerge through doing. You will work hands-on with a range of materials to understand how form, structure, and space develop through physical engagement. Across the semester, you will build a series of models and prototypes, learning how to refine ideas through iteration, observation, and reflection. Making becomes a way of thinking—helping you move from concept to realisation with confidence and clarity. Alongside this, you will develop your own reflective journal, a curated artefact that captures your process, experiments, and design decisions. This unit is open to students across architecture, design, and planning, and encourages you to explore how material, context, and disciplinary perspectives shape the way we create. It provides a strong foundation for future studio and technical work by strengthening your ability to translate ideas into physical outcomes. If you are interested in learning through making, experimenting with materials, and developing your own design approach—this unit will challenge and expand how you think and work.
