This unit examines how people design, use, and reconfigure digital technologies. Exploring human and digital interactions across different sociocultural contexts, the unit investigates the role of digital and design technologies in social relationships; its use in politics, activ-ism, resistance and other communities of practice; the relationship between consumers, companies and services at play in the digital ecosystem; and the role of regulators, infrastructures, policies and other mechanisms that shape the design and the material afterlife of digital technologies. The course will explore the mechanisms that underpin digital and de-sign technologies such as data, algorithms, Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, planned obsolescence. It will also focus upon a range of digital platforms (e.g., social media, smartphones, game consoles) and design infrastructures that illuminate the relationship be-tween ‘online’ and ‘offline’ spaces and the broader consequences of digital and designed technologies in our lives.
