2024 unit information
This unit of study is to be undertaken by double method science preservice teachers. This unit builds upon concurrent study of the integration of the Science as a Human Endeavour strand in the National Science Curriculum. The focus of this unit is to extend preservice teachers' understanding of some significant issues in the history and philosophy of science and the Nature of Science in supporting the development of quality learning experiences in science classes.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. appreciate the relevance of knowledge of the history, philosophy and sociology of science to an understanding of the nature and practice of science and their representation in school science syllabuses, teaching and learning
- LO2. critically evaluate curricula, resource materials, teaching practices in science education and the representation of science in public forums in the light of contemporary views on the nature of science
- LO3. develop approaches to the teaching and presentation of science which take account of current thinking in scientific literacy and argumentation
- LO4. use knowledge of the history and philosophy of science in the planning and preparation of motivating, meaningful and challenging learning experiences in science.
