2020 unit information

This unit of study is designed to introduce the students to issues and concepts related to counselling children and adolescents within the school setting. The focus will be on accurate interviewing and other assessment of the concerns, the development of therapeutic and intervention plans appropriate for students within the educational environment, and home and community settings when necessary, and the processes and skills required in counselling, including specific skills related to key therapies, with a focus on internalising mental health issues.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. assess child and adolescent personal, relationship-based, behaviour and mental health difficulties
  • LO2. determine if the problem is amenable to intervention within a school setting or if an outside referral network should be activated with in-school support
  • LO3. develop an appropriate therapeutic intervention plan for children and adolescents with mental health and behaviour issues amenable to change within a school environment
  • LO4. demonstrate effective counselling relationships with children and adolescents and their parents and teachers within a school setting
  • LO5. engage in and to evaluate appropriate therapeutic and behavioural interventions, within the context of collaborative support from significant others in the child or adolescent’s life, including school, family, community and health personnel
  • LO6. adhere to the ethical and professional guidelines for counselling and therapeutic interventions.
