This unit introduces students to the major issues underpinning qualitative research in applied fields such as education and social work. It examines the relationship between research questions and appropriate study designs, as well as ethical considerations. Students will develop a broad-based understanding of different qualitative methods and their strengths and limitations.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Understand how researchers make critical decisions about research methods, including the role of researchers' ontological and epistemological perspectives, conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and research questions
  • LO2. Understand the strengths and limitations of a range of different qualitative research methods and approaches
  • LO3. Understand the ethical implications of different research methods and researchers’ corresponding responsibilities
  • LO4. Apply a broad appreciation of qualitative methods to your own proposed research study
