EDPN6017: Applying Sport Science to Coaching

2025 unit information

You do not have to be an expert in sport science but an understanding of the fundamentals of sport science will add to the effectiveness of your coaching. The skilled coach is able to take the specialised information from sport science and blend it into a multidisciplinary perspective. The challenge for the coach is to develop an integrated model with the right mix of training activities, techniques and sport science support to optimise development and performance.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate sound, research-informed knowledge by employing critical thinking and judgement to evaluate and address complex coaching challenges.
  • LO2. integrate knowledge and techniques from various sport science disciplines into coaching practices to enhance athlete performance and development.
  • LO3. evaluate relevant factors and apply suitable sport science procedures, strategies and innovations in an ethical and responsible manner when planning and implementing programs to optimise athletic performance.
  • LO4. access, evaluate and analyse pertinent sport science information efficiently to inform evidence-based coaching decisions.
  • LO5. apply sport science knowledge and skills to coaching practice by solving real-life scenarios using insights from research, readings and class discussion.
