2024 unit information

This is the first unit of study in a suite of science curriculum units. In this unit, students will consider how discipline knowledge is organised, taught, and experienced across the secondary school years. The unit will emphasise the integration of knowledge within and across the discipline and curriculum area of Science and consider the role teachers play in facilitating pedagogy that scaffolds subject learning and connects to students' lives. This unit will provide students with the practical and theory-informed knowledge required to respond to the needs of diverse learners in science.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. appreciate the relevance of knowledge of the history, philosophy and sociology of science to an understanding of the nature and practice of science and their representation in school science syllabuses, teaching and learning
  • LO2. critically evaluate curricula, resource materials, teaching practices in science education and the representation of science in public forums in the light of contemporary views on the nature of science
  • LO3. develop approaches to the teaching and presentation of science which take account of current thinking in scientific literacy and argumentation
  • LO4. use knowledge of the history and philosophy of science in the planning and preparation of motivating, meaningful and challenging learning experiences in science.
