EDSE4049: Teaching Science Elective: EES

2023 unit information

This unit of study aims to prepare graduates for the teaching of Earth and Environmental Science in high schools as their teaching specialisation. Students will investigate the nature and purpose of teaching Earth and Environmental Science in for Years 11-12. Students will examine teaching and learning strategies to meet the needs of the diverse learners in Stage 6 and how to plan units of work and assess students' achievements.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. critically evaluate the aims and objectives of education EES in high school and stage 6 in particular
  • LO2. critically evaluate the aims and objectives of education EES in high school and stage 6 in particular
  • LO3. recognise the linkages between a range of academic disciplines and professional fields of practice and the content and skills taught in EES in NSW
  • LO4. demonstrate competence in a range of teaching methods and in approaches to learning that take into account central ideas and barriers to learning across the range of topics included in the NSW EES stage 6 curriculum
  • LO5. develop innovative approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment in EES that reflect a deep understanding of key concepts and barriers to learning
  • LO6. understand assessment and HSC requirements for EES Stage 6 and develop tasks that respond to these
  • LO7. demonstrate competence in obtaining information and in promoting the effective use of fieldwork, physical models, web and paper-based spatial and time-related data
  • LO8. discuss the history, practice and ethical issues of representative fields within the Earth and Environmental Sciences.
