EDSE4515: Aboriginal Studies 3rd Teaching Area

2022 unit information

This unit of study prepares pre-service teachers for teaching Aboriginal Studies in Stages 4 and 5 and Stage 6. Particular emphasis will be placed on consultation and engagement with local Aboriginal communities by valuing their knowledges, experiences, and skills. The course will focus on critical and culturally responsive pedagogical approaches to meet the diverse cognitive and affective needs of learners within a holistic framework. Team-driven class activities will build collaborative learning cultures and commitment to lifelong learning and active citizenship informed by social justice and human rights values. Ethical research methodologies will support pre-service teachers in becoming pro-active critical thinkers, intercultural communicators and educators in the field of Aboriginal Studies and in the wider education community.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Locate official curriculum planning documents and relevant policies and apply these to planning and implementing appropriate and authentic Aboriginal Studies programs, units of work and assessment tasks based on an outcomes approach to teaching and learning.
  • LO2. Identify and apply a range of documents pertaining to Aboriginal community consultation and ethical research practices in order to develop a set of appropriate practices for use in the Aboriginal Studies course
  • LO3. Critically analyse a diverse range of resources to ensure culturally appropriate application to a variety of teaching and learning experiences
  • LO4. Identify and analyse the needs of students, the school and the local Aboriginal community to guide program design, implementation, and evaluation as well as pedagogical approaches
  • LO5. Analyse and apply understandings of the historical and contemporary experiences of Aboriginal peoples including the impact on current educational settings, through content and pedagogical approaches that encourage active and informed citizenship in your students
  • LO6. Identify and apply current teaching theory and practice to embed cross curriculum content, literacy and ICT understandings and skills to appropriate areas of programming, resourcing and assessment including the use of multimedia resources and multi-modal texts
  • LO7. Critically analyse current issues and trends in educational policy and practice and their impact on Aboriginal Studies, Aboriginal students and Aboriginal education in general.
