EDUP1002: English, Literacy and Learning

2022 unit information

This unit of study begins the exploration of children's language and literacy learning in the context of the English key learning area. The unit provides an introduction to exploring K-2 literacy development and teaching practices. Students will become familiar with the fundamental components of reading and writing, children's literature, and multimodal texts, supported through varied learning activities and observation of teachers and children through classroom visits.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. describe introductory concepts about the social construction of literacy (1.1; 1.3; 2.1)
  • LO2. consider key theoretical approaches to talking, listening, reading and writing in the primary school context. (1.2; 2.1; 2.5; 3.4)
  • LO3. understand the role of language development and play in the early years (1.1; 1.3; 2.1)
  • LO4. consider some of the needs of diverse learners, including English as an additional language learners (1.3; 1.4; 2.4)
  • LO5. prepare and implement a selection of literacy learning activities and assessment tasks appropriate for K-2 learners (2.1; 2.3; 3.2; 3.3; 5.1)
  • LO6. develop a knowledge of and an interest in a range of children’s literature, especially picture books, for use with emergent readers and writers (2.1; 2.2)
  • LO7. critically reflect on classroom learning experiences in terms of reading and literacy theory (2.1; 2.6; 3.1; 3.2; 3.3; 3.4; 4.1; 4.2)
  • LO8. observe, teach and reflect on a variety of reading and writing strategies and assessment tasks for early years learners (2.2; 2.3; 5.1)
  • LO9. demonstrate knowledge of theory, skills and practices associated with teaching early literacy including reading, writing, spelling, grammar and handwriting (1.1; 1.2; 2.6; 3.4 )
