EDUP4007: Primary Languages A
2024 unit information
This unit of study focuses on the teaching and learning of additional languages in the primary school context and will enable students to prepare to implement a languages program. Students will focus on the rationale behind an early start to learning additional languages. Through an examination of policy and syllabus documents, suitable teaching methods and pedagogy, students will focus on what is required for establishing and sustaining a primary languages program. Students will also develop language lesson planning skills, and become familiar with materials that are suitable for the primary languages classroom.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. demonstrate knowledge of current languages education policies, trends in primary school languages program implementation as well as how languages are valued in the broader curriculum and the relationship between languages, literacy and numeracy
- LO2. demonstrate an awareness of aspects of the current NESA languages syllabuses, stages 1-3, along with lesson planning skills
- LO3. demonstrate knowledge of suitable models of pedagogy for teaching and assessing an additional language in the primary school, as well as suitable ways to differentiate the curriculum for individual students.
