EDUP4086: Aboriginal Education: Engaging Community

2024 unit information

This unit of study builds on EDUP2006 Aboriginal Students K-6. It is designed to increase pre-service teachers' knowledge and practical skills for connecting with local Aboriginal communities and authentically incorporating Aboriginal histories, cultures, experience and expertise in teaching and learning. Diversity of cultural practices, culturally responsive teaching, and learning from Country approaches will feature in this unit.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. LO1 understand Aboriginal community consultation and engagement in education and teachers’ responsibility to enable and facilitate this (GTS 1.4.1, 2.4.1, 6.4.1)
  • LO2. LO2 develop the skills for building a relationship with a local Aboriginal community to enhance teaching and learning in a school (GTS 1.4.1, 2.4.1, 7.4.1)
  • LO3. LO3 gain a deeper understanding of Aboriginal histories, languages, cultures and knowledge of country, and authentic ways to teach that knowledge (GTS 1.4.1, 2.4.1, 6.4.1)
  • LO4. LO4 have greater awareness of how teachers continue to develop their capacity in Aboriginal education through community connections and professional learning opportunities (GTS 1.4.1, 2.4.1, 7.4.1)
