ENSE2301: Gamelan 2

2024 unit information

In this unit of study students continue to learn to perform a repertoire of Balinese pieces of music on the Conservatorium's Balinese gamelan instruments. Through this, they will build on their knowledge and understanding of terminology for Balinese music, Balinese tuning systems, the roles of instruments in the gamelan, and formal characteristics of Balinese gamelan music. Performative and elaborative aspects of Balinese music will be experienced and analysed.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. perform complex pieces of Balinese gamelan music in an ensemble setting
  • LO2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the formal structure and performance practice of representative pieces of Balinese gamelan music
  • LO3. demonstrate familiarity with various tuning systems used in Balinese gamelan music
  • LO4. demonstrate knowledge of basic Balinese terminology used to describe musical and extra-musical concepts associated with gamelan music practice in Bali
  • LO5. demonstrate an understanding of how both Balinese gamelan instruments and gamelan music embody and reflect Balinese social, religious and cultural beliefs and practice
  • LO6. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the practice of learning and performing music without the aid of notation using a rote learning model-and-copy method
  • LO7. demonstrate improved ensemble skills, in particular, an enhanced ability to listen for and respond to aural cues in an ensemble setting
  • LO8. demonstrate improved overall aural skills, hand-eye coordination and longterm memory of melody and rhythm
  • LO9. demonstrate the ability to actively learn as a result of having to choose which aspect of the music to focus on when copying the teacher and attempting to commit parts to memory
  • LO10. demonstrate the ability to be ‘physical’ performers due to the absence of a notational intermediary between your body (as a performer) and the music (as performance) during the learning process
  • LO11. appreciate musical culture largely different from their own
  • LO12. demonstrate expanded awareness of the global contexts in which music exists, of what is possible in terms of how music can be constructed, and of the cultural purposes for which music can be created and performed.
