2020 unit information

An investigation into the theory and practice of translation, from French into English, and English into French.Students will be required to undertake weekly exercises in translation and to build a translation portfolio with critical and analytical commentary.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. critically evaluate theoretical issues and research methods discussed in the current literature in French literature, philosophy, film, cultural studies, art, language, and translation.
  • LO2. highlight similarities/differences in structure between French and English
  • LO3. correctly assess and use tone and register in French in various fields
  • LO4. develop skills for translation using such sources as dictionaries, advanced on-line language resources, and reference grammar works
