FRNC4113: Theories and Methods in French Studies

2020 unit information

This unit will introduce students to a range of critical research methods and theories relevant to research in French and Francophone Studies. It will facilitate reflective engagement on various conceptual frameworks and enable acquisition of the skills required to complete an extended research project, including critical evaluation of theoretical texts in both English and French. Active participation in seminar discussion is expected.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. accurately, succinctly and comprehensively describe with detailed reference to examples, the ways in which concepts of civilisation, culture and identity have been formulated in relation to different histories and global environments with particular reference to Europe and the EU (Information & understanding)
  • LO2. critically analyse and interpret a range of primary and secondary sources in relation to civilisational analysis in clear, accurate and succinct language at appropriate levels of theoretical and methodological sophistication (Analysis & interpretation)
  • LO3. construct arguments and hypotheses with reference to issues of civilisational analysis and identities in response to specific research questions (Thesis-building & argumentation)
  • LO4. undertake individual scholarly research under supervision in the field of civilisational analysis with reference to Europe and the European Union (Research)
  • LO5. apply relevant disciplinary and methodological approaches to civilisational analysis and the study of civilisations, cultures and identities using applicable disciplinary methodologies (Disciplinary Theoretical and Methodological understanding)
  • LO6. make informed contributions to group discussions of relevant material and provide critical and/or analytical reflections on group discussions and assignments (Collaborative discussion, communication)
  • LO7. engage in detailed, theoretically sophisticated and informed presentation, feedback and discussion of the main aspects of European socialism, dictatorship and literature, in a culturally and inter-culturally sensitive, tolerant and ethical manner (Presentation, communication and inclusiveness).
