This unit focuses on practical skills for researchers in cultural studies, gender studies, and closely aligned disciplines. It includes workshops introducing qualitative interviewing and ethnography for HDR students in these fields, as well as ethics principles and processes for these kinds of research. Highly recommended for students developing their research skills in these areas.

A developed research proposal and foundational disciplinary knowledge about research design. Usually, students will have completed or have equivalent knowledge to WMST6902 Arguing the Point, or be completing that unit

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. An understanding of some key qualitative methods for undertaking cultural research
  • LO2. An understanding of the processes involved in developing an ethics application for research with human subjects
  • LO3. An understanding of some of the key principles of qualitative interviewing
  • LO4. An understanding of some of the key principles of participant observation and taking fieldnotes
  • LO5. A foundational understanding of qualitative research in cultural practices, institutions and identities
