Geographic Information Science (GIS) plays a critical role in addressing major challenges facing humanity including water, food and energy security, natural hazard and disaster assessment, understanding the impacts of climate change, and promoting sustainable and liveable cities. GIS includes the practices of producing and negotiating geographic knowledge through the representation, manipulation and analysis of geospatial data using digital technologies. Students will be introduced to the fundamental theoretical concepts underpinning GIS including map projections and data models, will work with multiple spatial data sources including spatial databases and satellite data, learn more advanced GIS analysis including spatial statistics, and consider the ethics and alternative approaches to GIS such as participatory mapping and volunteered geographic information. Students will learn and apply these concepts in the context of contemporary environmental and social issues.
