Women's and children's health are critically important for the health of a population, as healthy women give birth to healthy babies, who then grow into healthy adults. Ensuring advocacy and equity in healthcare is essential to providing all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, with access to the resources and support they need. This unit explores why gender-focused advocacy and community mobilisation are valuable tools for global health, helping to amplify the voices of communities that are often unheard. Students are introduced to key advocacy approaches and frameworks and are supported to develop practical advocacy skills. The unit provides an introduction to the health status of women and children in resource-poor settings, highlighting the interconnectedness of women's and children's health and the importance of monitoring and reporting health outcomes. Students will explore some of the major causes of morbidity and mortality affecting women and children globally, alongside public health interventions and approaches that seek to improve these outcomes. Throughout the semester, a range of experts discuss major issues related to the health of women and children. In tutorials, students facilitate weekly discussions, gaining a deeper understanding of key global health challenges while applying advocacy tools in practice. The unit also includes oral assessment tasks that provide opportunities for students to develop and strengthen their communication skills, including the ability to present clear, succinct, evidence-informed, and persuasive arguments. These skills are essential for effective advocacy, enabling students to engage and influence a range of audiences in global health and policy settings.

GLOH5115 is a discussion-intensive unit where active participation and strong oral communication are central to learning. Students are expected to come prepared to contribute, debate ideas, and communicate their perspectives clearly and persuasively. |
At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the magnitude, and major causes of morbidity and mortality for women and children in low resource settings
- LO2. demonstrate familiarity with some of the current public health approaches to improving women’s and children’s health in resource poor settings
- LO3. consider advocacy issues for women and children with a public health lens, in particular issues related to the social, cultural, and economic status of women and children
- LO4. demonstrate advanced understanding of some of the major causes of mortality, and programs to reduce mortality related to a particular low or middle income country.
- LO5. develop higher-level thinking, oral communication, self-management, and leadership skills.
- LO6. practice collaborative skills and effective teamwork
