2023 unit information

The seminar will provide a discussion-based setting to examine core topic areas in the field of politics, including public policy, political theory, and comparative politics, among others. Students will discuss and debate ideas, and develop analytical and research essays on topics pitched at an advanced level.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of contemporary post-positivist theories, concepts, and methods in the discipline of government and international relations, and an ability to apply them.
  • LO2. Demonstrate the ability to find, use, and analyse a range of materials, including key literature, and show their relevance to empirical case studies using sophisticated theoretical arguments.
  • LO3. Demonstrate sensitivity, generosity, and cultural competence in interpretation and in argument when applying the key theories and concepts to political events and issues.
  • LO4. Demonstrate effective and respectful communication in formal assessments (written and oral) and informal class discussions.
