This unit provides the essential linguistic foundation to the study of Greek literature, philosophy, culture, and history. No previous knowledge of any foreign language is assumed and all grammatical concepts encountered will be explained. The unit introduces the basics of Greek through the study of grammar, and is valuable for students interested in all aspects of European history, archaeology, language, literature and philosophy.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. increase your body of knowledge in the following area: knowledge of the ancient Greek language, its basic structure, vocabulary, and modes of expression
- LO2. recognise and be able to generate Greek word forms
- LO3. understand the basics of Greek grammar
- LO4. read and write simple Greek sentences
- LO5. acquire many generic or transferable skills which are valuable or necessary for further study and for the workplace
- LO6. develop problem-solving skills in reading and interpretation of a complex language
- LO7. demonstrate analytical skills in investigating the ways texts use language to construct meaning and assert imaginative power
- LO8. develop skills in time-management, in prioritising and in working to definite goals and dead-lines.
