The Iliad, the Odyssey, and the poems of Hesiod are the classics of the classics. This unit offers an introduction to the language style and content of the Greek epics which served as the foundations of Greek cultural identity and are the primary textual sources for Bronze Age Geometric and Archaic Greek language religion, history, and thought.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate knowledge of Homeric Greek (vocabulary, idiom, & structure) and related scholarship
  • LO2. demonstrate insight into the history and influence of Homer on the Western literary tradition
  • LO3. use a variety of critical techniques to bear on the material presented during the semester
  • LO4. demonstrate a good knowledge of the majority of the morphology and common grammatical constructions of Homeric Greek
  • LO5. have improved personal transferable skills including analytical skills, critical skills, problem-solving skills, independent and group study skills, communication skills and intercultural knowledge.
