GRMN3611: Contemporary German Fiction

2023 unit information

This unit provides an overview of important currents in contemporary German fiction. Student will study a selection of highly acclaimed novels in depth and reflect on influential approaches in literary analysis. They will gain an insight into the diversity and originality of contemporary German literature and an understanding of the relationship between literary fiction and their historical and cultural contexts. The assessment tasks are designed to give students the opportunity to apply new knowledge and methodology through independent research.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. have in-depth knowledge about important currents in contemporary German fiction and close familiarity with cultural and social issues permeating cultural discourse in contemporary German speaking societies
  • LO2. demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the topics of the fictional works and their historical background
  • LO3. read literary fiction in their original language and apply concepts from currently critical theory for literary analysis and also develop their competency in cross-cultural and cross-lingual understanding
  • LO4. apply or further develop skills in critical analysis and synthesis, written and oral communication, teamwork and time management.
