In this unit students will apply advanced linguistic skills to complex biblical and extra-biblical texts. Students will analyse the poetic and linguistic features of the book of Psalms, and will evaluate the historical, social and linguistic background of the Dead Sea (Qumran) Scrolls.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. critically analyse the stylistic and linguistic techniques of Hebrew poetry
  • LO2. apply an increased facility with texts in complex forms of Hebrew
  • LO3. analyse the distinctive linguistic features of Qumran Hebrew
  • LO4. conduct guided independent research into key questions relating to Biblical poetic texts as well as questions relating to the Qumran (Dead Sea) Scrolls.
