This unit examines China’s business system and the strategic challenges and opportunities of operating in emerging markets. It introduces students to the economic and institutional foundations of China’s development and explores how firms compete, partner, localise, and expand in China and other emerging economies. The unit analyses key issues including market transition, business culture, institutional environments, state and private enterprise, innovation, global expansion, and the rise of emerging market multinationals. Drawing on international business strategy, students learn to evaluate how firms respond to institutional constraints, leverage opportunities, and manage uncertainty across different emerging market contexts. Through case analysis, discussion, and applied business research, students develop the ability to interpret contemporary business issues and formulate strategic responses relevant to China and the wider emerging market environment.
