INMS3614: Identity Politics in Indonesia

2027 unit information

Taught entirely in Indonesian, this unit explores how religious, gender, sexual and generational identities are negotiated and mobilized within Indonesia's democratic political framework. Rather than viewing these identities as fixed categories, the unit approaches them as dynamic constructs that are continually shaped through political processes, social movements, and public discourse. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, students will analyse how different actors frame their identity claims to gain political legitimacy and challenge or reinforce existing power structures Indonesia. The unit is one of six advanced units offered on a rotating basis, which can be taken in any order.
