Operations management examines how organisations design, manage, and continuously improve the processes that produce and deliver goods and services across international markets. In an increasingly globalised economy, effective operations are essential for firms operating within complex global supply chains. This requires the coordination of diverse stakeholders, technologies, and resources across cultures and regulatory environments to deliver superior customer value. This unit analyses the application of operations management principles in organisations participating in global supply chains. It focuses on how firms competing in international markets rely on key operational decisions, including process and capacity design, quality management, sourcing, and distribution. Students develop a foundation in the language, concepts, and analytical tools of operations management, and examine how leading organisations structure and optimise their operations to improve efficiency, flexibility, and competitiveness globally. Through real-world cases and contemporary examples, the unit demonstrates how operational excellence enables organisations to innovate and respond to changing global conditions. Key topics include global operations strategy, operations planning and control, sustainable resource management, quality improvement, and global sourcing, distribution, logistics, and retail operations. By the end of the unit, students will be able to evaluate operational trade-offs and explain how operations contribute to organisational success.
