Jazz History 3 explores jazz from 1980 to the present, examining the stylistic, cultural, and aesthetic debates that have shaped recent practice. The unit considers postmodernism, hybridity, neoclassicism, avant-garde experimentation, globalisation, technology, recording culture, and shifting ideas of tradition and innovation. Through key artists, recordings, scenes, and critical debates, students investigate how jazz has responded to changing social, institutional, and musical ecologies. The unit also introduces the history of jazz in Australia, from early adoption and local reception to contemporary attempts to define distinctive Australian approaches to improvisation, composition, ensemble practice, and identity.
