JAZZ2030: Jazz Vocal Workshop 1
2025 unit information
This course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of jazz singing, both in a solo and group setting. Students will learn the basics of healthy vocal technique and stylistically appropriate tone production and interpretation. Class activities will assist in the development of aural and rhythmic skills and the generation of improvisational ideas. Students enrolling in this unit must have sufficient skill to learn pieces independently, to a foundational level.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Develop a basic understanding of healthy vocal technique, alignment, breathing, phonation, resonance and tone development, articulation.
- LO2. Understand rhythmic feels commonly used in jazz.
- LO3. Develop an understanding of ways to interpret and personalise a song, including modification of phrasing and melody, and learn to apply these at a foundational level.
- LO4. Understand chord structures and develop skills associated with group harmony singing.
- LO5. Develop foundational improvisational skills through games and exercises.
