KRNS2010: Korean Cinema
2024 unit information
What leads to the current success in Korean Cinema? This unit explores contemporary Korean cinema, focusing on the three key aspects: gender, class, and ethics. How are gender and class (re)located in the films? How are the matter of ethics, or human morality, such as justice, responsibility, and forgiveness, discussed in the films? To answer these questions, students will view the Korean films after the 2000s directed by, such as Bong Joon-ho (Parasite and Snowpiercer), Lee Chang-dong (Poetry and Secret Sunshine), and Park Chan-wook (Old boy and The Handmaiden). By the end of the semester, students will develop critical ideas and analyse the cinematic artifacts with their own key terms.
