This unit explores the way language, body language, and images interact in communication in medical discourse including consideration of doctor/nurse and patient interaction, mental health and speech disorders, print and web-based health advice and the regulatory procedures governing medical services.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Understand what different linguistic approaches can be applied in the study of language disorders, medical treatment and its governance;
  • LO2. Recognize a variety of different communicative activities or genres used in medical processes;
  • LO3. Demonstrate how an understanding of language can be used to enact, construct and negotiate medical understandings and norms;
  • LO4. Demonstrate awareness of the (research and applied) field of clinical linguistics;
  • LO5. Engage with and critically apply their understanding of language and medicine in small research projects
