This unit is designed to support students in applying their knowledge of SFL and genre theory to develop educational and training material. Students will be guided in developing material for real classrooms. They will also be required to develop material for and teach an ESL class.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. familiarize yourself with the current trends/issues in educational linguistics, particularly from the ‘Sydney School’
  • LO2. apply knowledge of linguistics to language teaching/learning
  • LO3. develop strategies for assisting the literacy development of (NESB) students
  • LO4. design and develop materials and activities that can be used in class
  • LO5. evaluate teaching practice – both self and others
  • LO6. practice teaching in different settings.
