MECO6917: Book Publishing Business

2024 unit information

This unit of study introduces students to the book publishing ecosystem in the global context. Students will acquire knowledge of basic business operations and processes including project management, supply chain and business models as well as financial and contractual management. Students will gain insight into recent innovations in publishing, the disruptive forces driving change in the industry, and the full range of career options via guest lectures and discussions.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate awareness of the major sectors of publishing in Australia (including commercial, literary, educational, professional, scholarly, and non-profit), and their principal characteristics and business models.
  • LO2. analyse the impact of competing priorities on the industry's commercial, educational and cultural roles
  • LO3. recognise the sequence of processes in the production of a title, and how those processes relate to discrete roles within a publishing company
  • LO4. develop understanding of the financial and legal aspects of publishing.
  • LO5. acquire knowledge of the methods and steps to launch a new imprint or small publishing company.
