MECO6939: Research Methods

2025 unit information

This unit will develop students' knowledge of key research methods used in media, communications and digital cultures research. Students will be introduced to a range of research techniques and methods, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods, and will have the opportunity to reflect critically on these methods through practitioner presentations and directed discussion. The assessment tasks will help students develop their skills to design and undertake a supervised research dissertation and enhance their abilities as researchers and practitioners.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate a sound understanding of key research methodologies in media and communications and digital cultures
  • LO2. write research proposals and research design documents
  • LO3. demonstrate a sound understanding of the components and structure of a thesis
  • LO4. understand the ethical implications and protocols necessary for research involving human subjects.
  • LO5. evaluate new knowledge through independent research
  • LO6. think independently, analytically and creatively
  • LO7. exercise critical judgement and critical thinking to create new modes of understanding
