MRSC5013: Professional Practice Radiography 3

2024 unit information

This unit of study will continue to develop the student's knowledge in the professional practice of diagnostic radiography. The techniques covered will introduce more specialised applications and novel imaging techniques that the student may encounter in the workplace. Anatomy, physiology, pathology, artificial intelligence and radiation protection will be integrated with corresponding imaging techniques of selected body systems including CNS, spine GIT and MSK. Dedicated tutorials on multi-planar anatomy and imaging are included in the UoS. Students will be expected to supplement and broaden their learning by independent research on relevant topics using available libraries and online resources.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Understand the principles of contrast media (CM) and contextualise the correct use of a variety of CMs in vascular, gastro-intestinal and CNS imaging.
  • LO2. Critically review the underpinning principles for correct diagnostic imaging practice across different anatomical areas and organs including the gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary systems, central nervous system, spine and selected musculoskeletal areas.
  • LO3. Understand the basics of novel detecting technologies, artificial intelligence and deep learning models used across different diagnostic imaging applications.
  • LO4. Analyse the requirements of applying radiation protection and health and safety regulations to the diagnostic investigations.
  • LO5. Critically reflect the fundamentals of a large range of selected imaging conditions using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), x-ray and positron emission tomography (PET).
  • LO6. Consolidate knowledge of abdomen, hepato-biliary, spine and CNS cross sectional anatomy.

Unit availability

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.

The outline is published 2 weeks before the first day of teaching. You can look at previous outlines for a guide to the details of a unit.
