This unit of study builds on NURS1008 Foundations of Perioperative Nursing Practice to develop and refine students’ knowledge and nursing practice to provide comprehensive care to persons who are acutely ill. From a holistic, person-centred, and culturally safe perspective, the responses of individuals and their families to an acute deterioration in health will be explored. Through this unit of study, students will be able to link theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology gained in previous units of study to their nursing practice. Students will be able to conduct thorough and systematic assessment, understand how to plan care and apply evidence-based nursing interventions for people who are hospitalised. Students will enhance their clinical reasoning and decisionmaking capabilities to effectively identify, assess, plan, and provide care to people during episodes of acute deterioration and to prevent further deterioration.
