This unit of study will focus on developing students’ knowledge and understanding of healthcare system designs that are on the one hand safe and effective for patients and on the other, provide a flourishing environment for staff. The unit will shift the dial from focusing on bringing about individual practitioner behaviour change (which is a dominant focus of patient safety research and practice) to adopting a holistic and collaborative ‘systems approach’ to health service design and delivery. The unit will emphasise two complementary approaches to generate new and innovative methodologies for reducing complications arising from variations in practices and improving patient safety in healthcare: (i) person centredness and (ii) human factors and ergonomics.
