NURS5099: Promoting Health and Care in the Community

2020 unit information

This unit of study will focus on community needs assessment, community participation, health promotion, health literacy and the ways in which these inform and underpin promoting health and care in the community. Students will examine evidence-based health promotion strategies, develop community-based health assessment skills, and enhance their communication skills to work with people at home, including motivational and counselling skills and develop knowledge and skills in cultural competence person centred care.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. explore and critically appraise physical, psychological, socio-cultural, politico-economic, and environmental factors which influence community health by completing a community profile and community needs assessment
  • LO2. apply and critically evaluate epidemiological concepts of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in the planning of programs and priorities
  • LO3. demonstrate competence in communication and interaction with a variety of clients and families as well as other healthcare professionals, and develop knowledge and foundation skills in therapeutic counselling and motivational interviewing techniques
  • LO4. explore and critically appraise factors affecting cultural competence and person-centred care in community health settings
  • LO5. critically examine strategies and analyse the importance of working in partnership with clients, particularly those from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, in the promotion and management of their health in community settings
  • LO6. explore and critically appraise health promotion strategies, health literacy and community participation and the ways in which these inform and underpin promoting health and care in the community.
