This unit of study addresses nursing practices and interventions that aim to meet the needs of seriously or critically ill people in high acuity hospital settings. In addition to traditional emergency and critical care areas, it is recognised that changes within the health care system mean that ‘general’ hospital wards also have seriously ill people, and many who are older and have co-morbid conditions. Students will build on their knowledge, skills and experiences gained in NURS6035 Progression of Nursing Practice and NURS5205 Pharmacotherapeutics for Nursing, focusing on person-centred practice and shared decisionmaking with people experiencing critical disruptions to health at different life stages. Students will explore acute and life-threatening health problems such as interruptions to circulation, neurological functioning, and respiratory function. Understanding the nursing assessment and management required when caring for people who have deteriorating, and rapidly changing health conditions is a key focus of the unit.
