Economics provides a tool to understand the business of professional sports. The unit covers the economic way of thinking about sport, yielding insight into the sports business and introducing tools of economic analysis. Emphasis is on the decision-making of key agents, such as leagues, teams, and the government - as well as the strategy of sporting competition - such as in-game decisions to substitute players and other tactics. We consider the financial operation of leagues, issues surrounding sports betting, the role of government and optimal playing strategies in selected sports.
