At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. effectively and tastefully execute ornaments and/or add diminutions to music from the leading national keyboard schools of the early 15th to the late 18th centuries
  • LO2. demonstrate an understanding of the meaning of a wide range of ornament signs and symbols commonly encountered in keyboard music and execute these ornaments in a manner appropriate to the style and period
  • LO3. add appropriate diminutions to otherwise unadorned parts in repertoire of the 16th and 17th centuries
  • LO4. have a sound general understanding of the historical development of organ music, especially that of the 15th and 16th centuries
  • LO5. understand earlier notation systems, in particular German organ tabulature
  • LO6. demonstrate some basic keyboard improvisation skills.
