PAIN5019: Pain in Older People

2023 unit information

Readings and case studies will highlight the unique difficulties of elderly people who suffer from degenerative, painful conditions, often exacerbated by multiple losses, role changes, limited mobility and mood disorder. The emphasis will be on assessment and management of pain when complicated by these conditions.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Understand and evaluate complexities associated with the assessment and management of pain in older adults
  • LO2. Assess and manage pain in older people
  • LO3. Assess the impact of comorbidities on the pain of older people
  • LO4. Describe the physical changes that occur with nociception with increasing age
  • LO5. Describe and discuss issues around the management of pain conditions that affect older people more commonly (e.g. postherpetic neuralgia).
