Consolidation of stick and rehearsal techniques with emphasis on gesture and its expression in accordance with the score. Study of styles and interpretation of classical and romantic composers based on scores, recordings and the performance of works in class.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate fundamental conducting skills including basic baton technique with an emphasis on cues and gestures in accordance with the musical score
  • LO2. demonstrate fundamental rehearsal techniques
  • LO3. demonstrate fundamental interpretive skills
  • LO4. analyse scores, which should enhance your ability to interpret the works studied
  • LO5. demonstrate a knowledge and ability to communicate with musicians in a rehearsal and performance environment
  • LO6. demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of style and performance practice in relation to the works studied in class in instrumental and choral genres
  • LO7. demonstrate an interest in exploring culturally diverse repertoire
  • LO8. interpret musical scores and communicate these perceptions to choirs and instrumental ensembles at a basic level
  • LO9. demonstrate an interest in further conducting study in conducting 2 and advanced undergraduate conducting (new sequence).
  • LO10. reflect on own ability and journey as a conductor, identify areas of proficiency and areas requiring further development, reflect on conducting techniques, rehearsal techniques and performance dynamics.
