This unit equips pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to make safe, person-centred and evidence-informed prescribing decisions in the context of preventive health care. Learners will develop expertise in travel health, contraception, smoking cessation and oral health, including the signs, symptoms, assessment considerations and management options relevant to these areas of practice. Using these preventive health contexts, learners will apply the four-step prescribing process of information gathering, clinical decision-making, communicating and documenting treatment plans, and monitoring treatment responses. They will conduct comprehensive patient assessments and develop prescribing decisions that support person-centred care and the quality use of medicines. Through self-directed online learning, tutorials and simulated prescribing activities, learners will apply legal, ethical and professional principles to prescribing scenarios relevant to preventive health care. The unit develops the cognitive and clinical skills required to assess patients, manage risk and communicate treatment plans effectively.
