This unit equips pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to make safe, person-centred and evidence-informed prescribing decisions in the management of dermatological and musculoskeletal primary care conditions. Learners will develop expertise in the assessment and management of infectious dermatological conditions (such as impetigo and shingles), inflammatory dermatological conditions (such as psoriasis and eczema), minor acute wounds, and acute musculoskeletal pain. Within the clinical context of these primary care conditions, learners will apply the four-step prescribing process: information gathering, clinical decision-making, communicating and documenting treatment plans, and monitoring treatment responses. They will conduct comprehensive patient assessments and develop prescribing decisions that support person-centred care and the quality use of medicines. Through self-directed online learning, tutorials and simulated prescribing activities, learners will apply legal, ethical and professional principles to prescribing scenarios relevant to dermatological and musculoskeletal care. The unit further develops the cognitive and clinical skills required to assess patients, manage risk and communicate treatment plans effectively.
