PHIL2661: Philosophy of Sex

2022 unit information

This course addresses philosophical issues concerning sex. From the perspective of metaphysics, we will ask what sexual differences and relations are. From the perspective of moral and political philosophy, we will ask which sexual relationships and identities are ethically justifiable. Sample questions include: What is it to have a sexual identity; Is sexual difference innate or socially constructed; Is intoxicated sexual consent valid; Is there anything wrong with being a sex object; Is pornography problematic; Is bestiality ever ok?

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate basic knowledge of claims about sexual differences and relations, and familiarity with classical and current thinking about systematic theories of the metaphysics and ethics of sex
  • LO2. demonstrate acquired experience with different ways of thinking about sexual identities and relationships, and gain an understanding of the role for philosophy in forming society’s attitudes towards sex
  • LO3. demonstrate development of improved critical, analytical and verbal skills
  • LO4. evaluate new knowledge through scaffolded research
  • LO5. demonstrate engagement with normative philosophy's "principle-led" "case-centered" and "reflective equilibrium" methodologies, through which you should develop an awareness of the epistemology of value
  • LO6. demonstrate engagement with both a priori and a posteriori methodologies in metaphysics through which you should develop an awareness of the epistemology of reality.
