This unit will explore some of the fascinating philosophical issues arising from the study of formal logic. These include theory choice in logic, the relationships between various logics, the use of nonclassical logics in escaping paradox, and whether we need to be pluralist about logic.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand the nature of various issues in the philosophy of logic such as the nature of theory choice in logic and the nature of logical consequence
  • LO2. employ formal logical methods in the service of solving philosophical problems (especially logical paradoxes)
  • LO3. employ methods of formal logic and philosophy of logic in their own everyday reasoning, improving their analytic reasoning skills
  • LO4. understand the relationships between various logic systems and their technical details.
