PHIL4102: Research Topics: 20th Century Philosophy

2026 unit information

This unit will study key texts from the 20th century along with recent scholarship that has emerged from, or that engages with, these texts. Schools of thought treated may include logical positivism, existentialism, analytic philosophy, and pragmatism. Students will gain an understanding of how past ways of doing philosophy can influence the shape of present debates.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the nature and status of empathy in early modern philosophy
  • LO2. Demonstrate skills in argument analysis and conceptual analysis
  • LO3. Acquire interdisciplinary research methods through drawing of connections between philosophy, psychology, science and history
  • LO4. Develop historical perspective on origins of contemporary developments in philosophy of mind, ethics, moral psychology, epistemology.
