PHYS5012: Radiation Physics and Dosimetry

2024 unit information

This unit is normally undertaken as part of the Master of Medical Physics degree or the Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics. Topics covered include the interations of radiation with matter, the physical principles of dosimetry, radiation units, and radiation detectors and measurement.

Students should have basic undergraduate level physics and maths

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate an understanding of radiation interactions with matter, and an overview of different sources of radiation relevant to medical physics
  • LO2. demonstrate an understanding of Monte Carlo modelling
  • LO3. demonstrate an understanding basic radiation quantities with their units and to discuss the principles, which form the background of dosimetric measurements
  • LO4. demonstrate an understanding practical clinical dosimetry, the related but different approaches of absolute and relative dosimetry, application of dosimetry at various points of the path of a radiation oncology patient, the principles of practical dose measurement and the relevant formalisms used in the clinic
  • LO5. demonstrate an understanding of radiation dosimeters as used in radiotherapy, radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation safety and radiation metrology

Unit availability

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.

The outline is published 2 weeks before the first day of teaching. You can look at previous outlines for a guide to the details of a unit.
